Heater Won’t Turn On? Here are Some Things to Check before Calling in the Pros

If your heat won’t come on, the most likely culprits are a faulty thermostat, a dirty air filter, a tripped circuit breaker, issues with the furnace power switch, or a problem with the gas supply. Check your thermostat first to ensure it’s set to “heat” and the temperature is set higher than the room. It could also have dead batteries. If the thermostat is OK, check your air filter. If it is not super-dirty, go to your electrical panel next to see if a circuit breaker has tripped. Make sure the furnace power switch is turned on. Check if the gas line is properly connected and there is sufficient pressure. Other potential issues include a dirty or faulty flame sensor, blocked ducts, a full or clogged drain pan, or loose or damaged wiring.
