Getting the Most Out of Your AC this Summer

To maximize the efficiency, performance and lifespan of your home’s central air conditioning system, follow these tips.

Improve energy efficiency

To avoid over-stressing your system, keep your thermostat around 78 degrees when you are home, and higher when you are gone. A programmable or smart thermostat automates temperature adjustments, and can adjust the temperature shortly before you arrive home so your house is comfortable when you get there.

Keep the vents and registers throughout your home open and unblocked.

Inspect the insulation and seals throughout your home to prevent cool air from escaping through and around windows, doors and ducts.

Install ceiling fans to circulate cool air. They will let you set the thermostat a few degrees higher without any loss of comfort.

Maintain your system properly

Change your air filters monthly. A dirty filter reduces efficiency and can strain your HVAC system, reducing its effectiveness, increasing your energy bills, and shortening the lifespan of the system.

Keep your outdoor unit (condenser) free of leaves, dirt, and debris to allow for proper airflow.

Check and clean your evaporator coils regularly.

Most importantly, call us here at Jansen Heating & Cooling to get your annual professional AC maintenance scheduled. Our expert technicians

  • check refrigerant levels,
  • inspect electrical components and
  • clean your AC system thoroughly.

If you join our Maintenance Club, we will send reminders when it is time for your regular fall and spring service.

At the appointment, the Jansen technician will offer to make any needed small air conditioner repairs quickly and affordably, before they become expensive headaches. We will always give you an AC repair cost estimate (that we will stand by no matter what) before performing any work on your HVAC system.

Reduce your cooling load

Closing blinds and curtains can reduce indoor heat gain during summer days, thereby also reducing the energy required by your system to keep your home cool (which, in turn, lowers your energy bills).

Likewise, running your oven, dryer and dishwasher in the evening helps you avoid adding heat during the hottest part of the day when your AC system is at its highest demand.

Adding insulation to your attic and walls can help you maintain a consistent indoor temperature.

When it’s time, upgrade

If your system is over 10 years old, it might be time to think about replacing it. Newer systems are higher efficiency which will lower every utility bill for the life of the equipment.

Zoned systems are another smart upgrade: cool the rooms you use the most instead of the whole house all the time.

Variable-speed AC also provides better humidity control and energy efficiency.

Measuring efficiency

Efficiency in AC units is primarily measured by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), with higher SEER ratings indicating greater efficiency. As of 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the most efficient products through its ENERGY STAR Most Efficient program.

Here are some models the EPA rated as most efficient:

  1. Carrier Infinity 26: SEER rating up to 26

Incorporates Greenspeed® intelligence for optimal performance and energy savings.

  1. Trane XV20i: SEER rating up to 22

Utilizes the TruComfort™ variable-speed system to maintain consistent temperatures. Designed with Climatuff® compressors known for durability and efficiency.

  1. American Standard AccuComfort™ Platinum 20: SEER rating up to 22

Features AccuComfort™ variable-speed technology for consistent comfort. Built with quality materials for long-lasting performance.

  1. Lennox XC25: SEER rating up to 26

Features variable-capacity operation for precise temperature control and humidity removal.

Key considerations beyond the SEER rating

  • Size and capacity: Ensure the unit matches your home’s cooling needs. An over- or under-sized unit can lead to inefficiency and discomfort.
  • Refrigerant: The EPA has banned refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP), prompting the adoption of eco-friendly coolants.
  • Professional installation: Consult a certified HVAC professional for correct setup and maintenance. Here in Cincinnati, you can rely on the experienced technicians from Jansen Heating & Cooling.

Jansen Heating & Cooling, considered the best area AC company in the Cincinnati area, can help you pick the best AC model for how you use your home, how long you plan to stay in it and your budget.
