Getting the Most Out of Your Home AC this Summer
To maximize the efficiency, performance and lifespan of your home’s central air conditioning system, follow these tips:
Improve your energy efficiency
To avoid over-stressing your system, keep your thermostat at 78 degrees when you are home, and higher when you are gone. A programmable or smart thermostat automates temperature adjustments, and can even move the temperature down shortly before you arrive home so your house is comfortable when you get there.
Keep your vents open and unblocked.
Seal your home to prevent cool air from escaping through windows, doors and duct leaks.
Install ceiling fans to circulate cool air. They will let you set the thermostat a few degrees higher without any loss of comfort.
Maintain Your system properly
Change your air filters monthly. A dirty filter reduces efficiency and can strain your HVAC system.
Keep your outdoor unit (condenser) free of leaves, dirt, and debris for proper airflow.
Check and clean your evaporator coils regularly.
Most importantly, call Jansen in the spring to get your professional AC maintenance scheduled. Our technicians
- check refrigerant levels,
- inspect electrical components and
- clean your AC system thoroughly.
If you join our Maintenance Club, we will send reminders when it is time for your regular fall and spring service.
At the appointment, the Jansen technician will offer to make any needed small air conditioner repairs quickly and affordably—before they become expensive headaches. We will always give you an AC repair cost estimate (that we will stand by no matter what) before performing
Reduce your cooling load
Closing blinds and curtains can reduce indoor heat gain during summer days.
Likewise, running your oven, dryer and dishwasher in the evening helps you avoid adding heat when AC demand system is highest.
Adding insulation to your attic and walls can help you maintain a consistent indoor temperature.
When it’s time, upgrade
If your system is over 10 years old, it might be time to think about replacing it. Higher efficiency will lower every utility bill for the life of the equipment.
Zoned systems are another smart upgrade: cool the rooms you use the most instead of the whole house.
Variable-speed AC provides better humidity control and energy efficiency.
Measuring efficiency
Efficiency in AC units is primarily measured by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), with higher SEER ratings indicating greater efficiency. As of 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the most efficient products through its ENERGY STAR Most Efficient program.
Here are some models the EPA rated as most efficient:
- Carrier Infinity 26: SEER rating up to 26
Incorporates Greenspeed® intelligence for optimal performance and energy savings.
- Trane XV20i: SEER rating up to 22
Utilizes the TruComfort™ variable-speed system to maintain consistent temperatures. Designed with Climatuff® compressors known for durability and efficiency.
- American Standard AccuComfort™ Platinum 20: SEER rating up to 22
Features AccuComfort™ variable-speed technology for consistent comfort. Built with quality materials for long-lasting performance.
- Lennox XC25: SEER rating up to 26
Features variable-capacity operation for precise temperature control and humidity removal.
Key considerations beyond the SEER rating
- Size and capacity: Ensure the unit matches your home’s cooling needs. An over- or undersized unit can lead to inefficiency and discomfort.
- Refrigerant: The EPA has banned refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP), prompting the adoption of eco-friendly coolants.
- Professional installation: Consult a certified HVAC professional for correct setup and maintenance.
