6 Reasons Your AC’s Not Supplying Cool Air

If you can hear your air conditioner’s blower but the house is starting to feel warm, you have a malfunctioning cooling system. You can confirm that by feeling the air coming out of a register and/or checking the thermostat reading.

How to fix an air conditioner not cooling in Cincinnati

Here are some possible reasons your AC isn’t working properly. Check these things first before calling a professional:

1.    The thermostat is set to “heat” rather than “cool.” This happens more often than you think. Someone in a hurry sets it wrong or perhaps somebody touches it and changes the setting without realizing it.

  1. The thermostat is set to “on” or “fan-only,”which means the fan is running continuously, whether the AC is running or not. Put the setting on “auto” so it only runs when the AC is working, unless you’re seeking continuous ventilation.

(The fan-only setting technically isn’t a reason the AC isn’t cooling your home, but it may falsely lead you to believe the air conditioning is working when it’s not.)

  1. The air filter for the AC air handler (or in some systems the furnace blower) is clogged with dust and dirt. If it’s bad enough, the cooling system will struggle to push air through the ductwork. (This issue won’t warm the conditioned air, but it will force your equipment to work harder,
  • wasting energy,
  • stressing parts and
  • leading to uneven cooling.)
  1. The heat-exchange coils are dirty. If the coils in either the outside (condensing) unit or inside (evaporator) unit of your split-system air conditioner are coated in dust or dirt, this will restrict the heat-exchange process that’s central to cooling in your home.

This will force the AC to work harder and longer to condition your air. Ask your trusted Cincinnati AC repair company to clean the coils, or just make sure you schedule preventive maintenance on your cooling system in the spring.

  1. The outside AC unit isn’t turning on. Check to make sure the outside unit of your central AC is switched on and/or getting power. If not, the inside unit’s blower may continue to operate without creating or distributing cool air. Inspect the area around the outside unit and make sure nothing’s restricting the flow of air into the condenser/compressor.
  2. Refrigerant is low.If refrigerant is low in your cooling system, either because it was under-filled in the first place or it’s leaking, this may result in deteriorating performance, including air that’s not as cool as it should be. This is a job for an air conditioning repair company professional, who will test the system to make sure it has the right amount of refrigerant.
