If your furnace won’t kick on, you can try a few things before calling an HVAC professional. First, make sure the furnace blower is getting power. Is there an on-off switch? Has the circuit breaker tripped? Is the thermostat set to “heat?” Is the temperature setting higher than the room temperature? If the thermostat is battery-operated, does it have a fresh battery? If you heard a banging or rattling noise before the furnace broke down, this might signal loose or broken machinery. Your burner might become clogged with soot or ashes. In this situation, it’s common to hear little explosions as gas accumulates at the opening before it ignites. If a burner gets totally clogged, your furnace often won’t work.
