How to Know if a Quoted AC Repair Cost is Fair

There are several things you can do to determine if a quoted cost to repair your AC is fair. First, get 2-3 estimates. Make sure each includes the same scope of work and quality of parts. Then check industry standards for the repair you are having done. Look for hidden fees (ask for a detailed breakdown of labor, parts and additional costs). Watch out for diagnostic fees that may not be applied toward the repair cost. Look to see if the quote includes a labor warranty, and if the parts are covered under manufacturers’ warranties. Check online reviews. Make sure the firm is licensed and insured. Watch for red flags like pushy upsells or vague pricing. If the repair cost is more than 50% of a new unit’s cost, think about replacement. If your system is older (10-15 years+), you may be better off getting a new, more energy-efficient air conditioner.
