Air-source heat pumps can provide energy-efficient heating and cooling year round. However, during especially cold weather, most heat pumps aren’t equipped to draw sufficient heat energy from outside air that’s well below freezing. In Cincinnati a dual fuel heating system can solve that problem, pairing an efficient heat pump with a backup combustion furnace during those colder days for comfortable heating. This system also saves energy when it kicks on the furnace, since natural gas is cheaper to burn than the electricity that powers a heat pump’s backup heating element. Without the dual fuel option, most heat pumps will switch to auxiliary (or emergency) heating on cold days.
